It has been and gone, and we have met and renewed friendships again and
had a very good time. Those who could not make it this year, for
whatever reason, were all missed.

We had excellent weather both days, sunny without being too hot, and no
rain. The course was a little firm but otherwise in excellent condition.
And there is an old git out there somewhere who proved that longest
drive competitions are not only the prerogative of the young.

Unfortunately, from my point of view, the Morton Plate has gone the
wrong way back up the M6. Congratulations to the Northern team for a
very convincing 6 - 3 victory.

We Southern Shandy Drinkers were 2 - 1 down after day one. Although I
managed to play to about 10 over on Sunday, Richard Brown and I were
sadly beaten by John Laird and Dave Robinson 2 & 1. For a man who claims
that he only swings his golf clubs once a year these days, The Laird's
swing is still a thing of beauty. I was pleased to see Dave playing very
well too. I think I may have to nobble your sand wedge next time I see
you, Dave, after your super shot on 17. The Southern win came from Paul
and Felix.

Day two's result was 4 - 2 to the North. I could not contain John Hallas
whose 41 points went on to take the Williams Cup, and as Northern
Captain he took the Plate as well.

Congratulations, John. I look forward to hearing more on your ideas for
next year.

I forgot to thank Richard for organising the sweepstake, so I'd like to
take the opportunity to say that now.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who came, you are all wonderful.

Glad to hear of another successful gathering, Mark.

And of course, the balance of the universe is restored....

To Felix' and my pleasure, there had been virtually no rain through most of
the whole week, and it became even better on Tuesday, while Sonja reported
about rain & low temperatures in Germany. We ended up sitting on the patio
of Whitehill Golf Club wishing the day would never end...

Resistance was futile now...

...but The South will be back next year!

My congratulations, too, to you, John, and all winners!

My undivided agreement with John's plans is a wee bit clouded ;-> by the
fact that this course pleasures me so well, from the scenic impressions to
the confidence I have in my play there. Alas, new location, new game
- I like the prospect of it!

And if Cambridge would become true as the location, we'd probably have the
shortest trip - from Stansted :o)

Lastly, thanks to everyone who came, you are all wonderful.
I would like to give this back to you - everything went fine, on the
course, in the hotel, through the night, even up to the weather!

Thank you very much, Mark!

Ciao,

Paul

A big thanks to Mark for a superbly organised 2010 event - a scarcely
believable 10 years since our first annual gathering ;-)

It would be hard to find serious fault with Patshull Park as a venue,
and this year the sunny weather meant we were able to appreciate the
course so much more. I think it has some very good "thinking" holes -
there wasn't always so much thinking going on in my two matches,
though, as the sound of balls clattering into trees was much to the
fore ! It didn't seem to spoil everyone's good spirits as much as add
to the fun. Thanks to Mark, Dave, Richard, Chris and Felix for their
company around the course.

[I would trade much of the (ahem) beauty of my swing for the ability
to actually strike the ball better, truth be told. Look no further
than the old git for an example of elegance and precision in that
department...]

The clubs are back in the cupboard for now, perhaps not to reappear
for another 12 months, but whether that turns out to be the case or
not, I am already looking forward to 2011. A nicer group of like-
minded golfers would be hard to find.

Happy golfing to everyone in the meantime.

It went well for those who could make it, though not everything was
perfect behind the scenes. At least now I know why they ran out of
buggies on Monday - some of those guys from the English Blind Golf
Association were something to behold.
