If I remember rightly, on pars 4 & 5, both players tee off, play each
other's ball then choose which to play from there on.
Par 3s are played as normal greensome, choosing the favoured teeshot.

Also know as a Rye Greensome, I believe.

On the subject of various formats and what they are called, frequently on
charity and society golf days, a Stableford is played in teams of 3 or 4
with a team score where, for instance, only the best two scores at each hole
count, or the best 1 on Par 5s; the best 2 on Par 4s and the best 3 on Par
3s or other variations on the theme.
Has anyone come across a name for these formats, other than simply a Best
Balls Stableford?

Thanks,
Malcolm

The only one I can think of is the 3-ball stableford we play sometimes
where all three scores count on the first 6 holes, 2 count on the middle 6
and 1 on the last six, which our club randomly calls either triples or
3-2-1. I've not come across the format you mention above though, sorry.

LHC.

LHC.
We have two variations of this called St Ives Scramble and St Ives Waltz
respectively (something to do with the club at which I play ;)
1. 1 to count on first 6, 2 on 2nd 6 and 3 on 3rd 6. That is better known
as pressure!
2. 1,2,3. 1,2,3. 1,2,3. 1,2,3. 1,2,3. and 1,2,3.

Formats like this are good for so called Social Golf and I could stir things
up and suggest something on these lines for FoA2008 Sunday's team matches.
Only joking! I'm not objecting to mixed 4BBB matchplay.

Yes we also do this format and call it the Vienna Waltz!

I've heard this to be named "Chapman Foresome" oder "American Foresome".

It is the third stage after

"classic foresome" (tee off alternately) and
"greensome" (both tee off, then decide which ball to choose)

Ciao,

Paul
