Hi all
I'm a complete beginner. I was thinking of buying a set of clubs from
Argos
(the Howson tour plus irons and putter set or the Pro Drive full set). I
don't want to spend much money because I may not like it. Any thoughts?
Buy something cheap and second hand from the local paper.

They do sets of clubs in your local Sports Soccer shop for GBP99. IIRC
they're Donnay ones, and they include a putter and a bag. As a
complete beginner, it's got to be better than getting a knackered old
set of second hand clubs (which is how I started out), IMHO.
Not necessarily - there are lots of good quality 2nd hand bargains around

From the Argos ones I reckon you'd be OK with the Howson ones, as
Howson are a decent budget club manufacturer.
My son had a set of Howson Derby for about 3 years. He is a big
hitter, and some of the clubs were bending by the time he traded them
in for another budget set (of Hippos). I'd say they were good value at
£125 at the time.

I started with lessons last August and bought the Cougar set with trolley
and balls. from American Golf in November for £199. The clubs seem to be
good, but a point of reference, Had I waited a few more weeks, i.e. till
January, I could have saved another £50..... JJB sports sold a starter set
including shoes and trolley for about £200 as well.

As a beginner are you managing to find games? It has been my biggest
struggle trying to get out on the course, because only being off at
weekends, no-one seems to want to play beginners during the busy periods.

I have also looked at American Golf Discount etc., but nothing jumps
out.

Hi
Depends how much you want to spend.
I am no expert, believe me, but I started last year with a set of Hippo
John
Daly clubs.
I see they are still on sale in American Golf Discount for £249, which
include stainless steel pw-9 irons with steel shafts, 1,3 and 5 woods with
graphite shafts, putter and a decent stand bag. IMHO very good value. I
also got a few balls and headcovers for the woods thrown in for the price
(I
paid £299).
I've since replaced the putter with one better suited to me and yesterday
bought a 60 degree lob wedge, but am very happy with the all round quality
of the clubs. Recommended.
Also, and I stand to be corrected, Hippo are made by the same people as
Howson.
