Is the club in this auction legal?

I thought that clubs would have to have grooves, can't just have this
sandpaper effect or am I wrong??

Thanks
Angus

Angus,,

Have a read of pages 150,151 and 152 of the rules of golf (Appendix 2).
You will be able to determine for yourself what is legal or not.

I haven't looked at the advert but my recollection of the requirements of
the face of a club is a phrase "decorative sandblasting". This can cover
the whole face with no grooves.

A few years ago, Oddysey used to make wedges (Blackspin IIRC) with an insert
that imparted more spin - I don't recall them being illegal.

I, in fact, own a Taylor Made wedge that (originally) came with a
tungsten/something else insert in the face - again it was most definitely
legal at the time. However it had grooves.

I've still got it, but the roughness of the surface wore off ages ago, so
now it's just a different coloured (slightly softer feel) lob wedge :-)

Despite what the ad on e-bay says, it doesn't conform.

We had a case of a player using a similar wedge here (in this case
branded "Tiger Bite"). It had the same face as the Spinsert one advertised.

I referred the matter to the Victorian Golf Association and it was
definitely non-conforming, both for Appendix II, 5. Clubface a. General
(imparts significantly more spin to the ball than a standard steel face)
and b. Impact Area Roughness (surface roughness exceeds that of
decorative sandblasting or fine milling).
