Hit ball into bunker; came to rest against a stone the size of a house
brick (hyperbole). Local rule permits moving of stone, but this would
have moved the ball. Result? Ball extracted, big mark on lovely club.
Could I have moved this chunk?

Yes. If the ball moves, you may replace it without penalty. See rule
24-1a

Just for my first ever posting on the rules (:-)) Stones in bunkers
are "Movable Obstructions" and *not* "Loose impediments" causing rule
24-1 to apply as pointed out by johnty.
